Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in Holyoke, MA. Many of my students are from low income and poverty households. Recently, we have received many students from Puerto Rico due to the hurricane. Our school was taken over by the state two years ago because of poor student performance. Many of our students come to school excited and ready to learn. It is hard to teach science without science equipment, though.

I want to provide the best learning environment for my students and really want to provide an avenue for careers in science.

My Project

Teaching in an underserved, Spanish speaking, elementary school in Holyoke, my students do not have the opportunity to participate in an auditorium style show do to lack of funds in the school budget. I feel that by bringing in high quality, engaging, and "specialty" science shows will truly inspire and engage my elementary students - specifically in Science.

My grade 5 students will be taking the Science MCAS for the first time, and I need to carefully plan the curriculum to make sure that every grade 5 student is ready and fully prepared to succeed in this standardized test in Spring 2019.

The MCAS also refers/recalls prior knowledge from Grades 3 and 4, as well. I believe that by engaging all Grades 3 - 5 will will provide that "hook" that the students will need in the beginning of the 2018 - 2019 school year. By providing funding for an assembly, I can reach more students more efficiently, than trying to provide the same experience with an off -site field trip. The assembly saves the school/district expensive costs for buses and the requirement of a registered nurse, to accompany every off- site trip.

Keith Michael Johnson is an amazing and highly energetic Science performer, mixing knowledge, and fun using everyones "favorite" - BUBBLES!
