Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My sixth graders at MS 118, an urban public school in the Bronx, are fascinated about what is happening in the world around them. As some students have family members fighting overseas and others have family members who are not yet American citizens, these issues are of utmost importance to them. Unfortunately, most of the news they are exposed to comes from tabloid newspapers available on street corners and subway stops. The credibility of said papers is sorely lacking, and they are often filled with popular gossip, versus quality content, providing poor role models and stories not fit for students. It is important to my students and myself that they are aware of what is happening in the world, but we do not currently have the resources to make this possible. Our class needs a subscription to "Teen Newsweek" and "Time for Kids" so they will have reputable sources for news on a weekly basis. Students will be able to be fluent on world issues through reading and responding to weekly reports. Especially as an election year is quickly approaching, I want my students to be informed on critical issues so that they can make their voices heard. Students will use these issues to model their own class newspaper and will be empowered to write elected officials about their perspective on the issues. Additionally, with the weekly installments of non-fiction connecting to their other subjects, students will have ample exposure to a genre that makes up a large portion of their ELA exam. Once again, your providing these issues will not only help my Bronx students master non-fiction and see how subjects are related, it will most importantly help them become world citizens.
