My Students
"Why are we here?" is what I always ask my second-grade students every day. They always answer with a resounding, "To do our best and learn something new!" as they enter my class with smiles on their tiny faces.
Our elementary school has a high number of students who are first-generation immigrants from Haiti that are high-poverty.
I teach two groups of second-grade classes; one group has ESE/special needs children and the other has some who are gifted.
In September, our school community was badly affected by Hurricane Irma's destruction, resulting in the basic amenities that my students need to prosper and succeed, not always readily available.
Even though we have to cater to and adapt to such a diverse range of learning needs, we strongly believe that all children will learn if given the right tools and technology. As their second grade teacher, my main objective is to enhance and improve their young learning experiences, especially when it pertains to their learning environment.
My Project
My students need laptops as our math curriculum is fully online. In addition, they have to go on a district-wide program for reading and math daily in order to enhance their learning skills. The district requires them to utilize the program in class and at home but because we are very limited in classroom computers, my students are not able to access the program as often as they should which puts them at a disadvantage from other students. Our school's computers are extremely slow and outdated. I am requesting a Lenovo laptop because one of our laptops stopped working 2 weeks after the warranty expired.
With the replacement laptop, my students can use daily without any hassle.
This laptop will help make sure that the students have access to the district-wide math program in order to achieve learning gains and excel in the classroom.
I will be able to rotate the students on the laptops and they will be able to experience what it is like to use a laptop. These students deserve a fair chance at success and I am determined to make sure they get it.
