My Students
First grade is a fun place to be. Our students keep us laughing and learning. A day in the life of a first grader, at our school, includes silliness, curious questions, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.
Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using hands on, whole group methods.
They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.
My Project
My students need leveled books to tie into our social studies units of studying our community and the world. We are working hard on building a leveled library for guided reading. We want to provide students with a variety of texts to read in guided reading groups that are at their levels. After our students read the book with a teacher, they bring it home to read to someone at home. For the next week or so students have the book in their book boxes to re-read each day to practice fluency and deepen their comprehension.
Having leveled social studies books provides students with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of social studies content.
We are currently lacking non-fiction leveled books to keep our readers interested in the world around us.
Our overarching goal is to eventually compile enough sets of leveled literacy books that 6 Kindergarten and 6 First Grade classes will be able to pool their resources, create a leveled book room and provide students with more opportunity to get new titles in their hands. We would like to expand our book choices so that students are using books that are cross curricular and aligned with out Science and Social Studies Standards. By providing students with the materials they need, we are engaging them in literacy and creating a life-long passion for books!
