This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school outside of Orlando where 100% of the students receive free meal benefits. Our area has been hit hard by Covid, and school looks so different this year. I would love to be able to bring joy to my students by offering all of the Sunshine State books from this year in my classroom library. My students eagerly accept when I have chosen books just for them, and my favorite part of teaching is creating life-long readers.
My Project
The county-prescribed materials for teaching my students are outdated, relatively boring, and not geared towards student interests.
Scope magazine offers engaging articles, debates, and activities that students care about.
By presenting material that students are interested in, it automatically increases student learning. The corresponding activities help students reach beyond multiple choice questions into critical thinking skills, real-world application, and solving of actual problems.
When students actually enjoy their reading assignment, it helps foster interest in other reading, encouraging them to reach further into a topic. This creates life-long researchers and thinkers.
