This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a wonderful group of amazing children who have many goals and aspirations. Many of my students struggle with the barriers of poverty, language acquisition, special needs and parents working very long hours; however, these factors serve as motivation to push my students to be better and more focus with their efforts. My classroom is special because the students I teach are so engaged and willing to learn that they push me to be the best teacher that I can be for them.
My Project
Understanding the world around us is very important. The study tour opportunity that I am requesting will take me to Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. For the duration of the tour, there will be an expert tour director in addition to local tour guides to help me learn about the history, people and culture.
The knowledge I gain from my experiences will allow me to introduce my students to new vocabulary, lifestyles, geography, art, music and more.
All of the lessons will be a wonderful addition to our social studies and English language arts curriculum. Students will compare and contrast their environment with that of these various Asian countries. Students will discuss with peers the difference in environments, landscapes, culture, and food. Instruction will be enhanced by the cultural and diverse experiences from this trip. This project will give me the information I need to increase rigor in my students' learning. I will be able to immerse myself in the local culture, learn about the local ecosystems, and discover how these places work to protect its natural resources. Through exploration, I plan to deepen skills in recognizing different perspectives, communicating ideas, and investigating the world with curiosity and open-mindedness, thus providing me with the tools to empower my students to do the same in their academic pursuits.
Because this program is led by the non-profit organization Global Exploration for Educators Organization, I will be able to learn from vetted local guides, museum docents, and other educators on the trip. Through this collaboration, I will be able to put everything into a more meaningful context and spark discussions on how to bring lessons back to my classroom.
