This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in 5th grade begins with a mindful sit and a quick write in our journals about gratitude. Many of my students experience trauma in their homes so the biggest challenge is addressing all their needs. By the end of the year, I want them to grow at least one year in their reading levels.
My students are resilient 5th grade students.
I work in a Title 1 school where 95% of our population are second language learners. Many of our students experience trauma outside of school. However, my students come to school with an enthusiasm for learning. The teachers at my school are devoted to addressing student needs. We are trained in curriculum to help support our second language learners to succeed. My students this year are exceptional in their ability to overcome. They have made great progress this year already, but the majority continue to be below grade level in reading. Many of them are motivated readers but lack resources at home to continue to read and grow. Many don't have that quiet space at home to retreat and read because their houses are overcrowded. In our class, I do not own class sets of any novel. That is why I would like to have a class set of a wonderful piece of literature for my students.
My Project
With the class set of the novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio we will conduct a book study. In their different level reading groups, students will engage with the text and learn different literature concepts that are required by the new Common Core State Standards. With this novel we will be able to address inferences, theme, summarizing, point of view, compare and contrast, and reading grade level text. I will be able to differentiate their activities by having a class set.
Not only will they be able to learn all of these concepts, but they will be fully engaged with a class set. Many of my students do not own books and the books they check out from my library and the school library are sometimes the only books they read. In class, many times they must share or I just read aloud. Students will be highly engaged with a book in their hand and with a book that addresses so much of what my 5th graders are experiencing such as bullying, being different, and growing up.
If you donate to my project you will be making a difference in my classroom and in 28 students' lives.
With the high needs of my students and those in our school, many times we do not get to do book studies or highly engage in a novel. You will be giving my students an experience they too often do not have. You will help cultivate a love for reading in many of their lives that will help them be life long readers and learners. Thank you for any donations you can give!
