My Students

My students are talented, engaging, daring, and courageous high schoolers who, in spite of their varying exceptionalities (Autism, Down Syndrome, cognitive disabilities, physical, occupational, and speech needs), work hard every day to show growth and learn to navigate the world. They are 9th-12th graders who are not only working on English, math, science, social studies, social skills, and art so that they can go forth and spread their wings in the workforce, but they are young adults who will soon have to know how to manage any income earned through workplace programs and any government assistance provided to them.

Many of my students are non-verbal or struggle with basic communication, but they have the same goals and dreams as their same-aged peers--independence is key and they need as many manipulatives and real-life experiences as we can provide before they graduate to sharpen their skills.

The majority of my students come from low-income families, some speak multiple languages, and all of them have disabilities. But, they are also young adults who want to do for themselves and take pride in their hard work and experiences.

My Project

In addition to academics, I also teach our team’s high school ESE 2D Studio Art and our artists are wanting to move beyond drawing—we need to expand our horizons into painting! I am SO excited to help them learn color theory, blending, texture, line, and all of the other artistic principles that will bring their creativity to life!

In a world where language and academics may be a struggle, Art is freeing and necessary.

Help me help them speak their truths through painting! With these materials, I can teach lessons on taking simple shapes and turning them into figure drawings (my kids LOVE to draw animals), show them how to layer their art with multi-step landscape paintings, teach them about color theory with blending primary colors to create an entire rainbow of colors, and give each student the gift of materials and curriculum that is comparable to their peers who take general education art classes. It will also allow us to create a watercolor storybook using all of the techniques we learn in the donated books. Beyond learning the specifics of painting and art, students will learn to follow directions, compare samples to their own work, problem solve, and practice breaking down a whole into individual parts. By working through the techniques and creating a finished watercolor book, they will also be learning patience, grace when they make mistakes, and that there are no “mistakes” in creativity!
