My Students

The school where my students attend is in a desert valley surrounded by red sandstone cliffs, volcanic mesas, and a sandy river that gives life to this special place. Some students have lived in the area for generations and others have moved here more recently. With nature in their backyard and beautiful parks that are spread across the city, children in this area naturally love to be outside. Whether it's camping along a mountain stream, exploring rock features, cooling off at a splash pad, or simply riding bikes, these students know how to seize the moment in this amazing landscape!

In a classroom that promotes personalized learning, today's students thrive on making real-world connections when solving problems.

They are digital natives and love using technology to enhance their experience in the classroom. Students are motivated by challenging activities and quickly learn that mastering a skill takes hard work, practice, and determination. With a growth mindset, these students acknowledge that making mistakes is part of the learning process and the key to their success!

My Project

Children of all backgrounds come together and feel connected through music. Having a piano in the classroom is a simple way to create a safe learning environment where engagement is high and learning becomes effortless.

Celebrating the diversity of my students is easy to do with a piano.

Many of my students speak Spanish and have ties to other countries. Playing folksongs from these countries not only introduces new sounds and rhythms but also emphasizes the role of culture and community in our classroom where students feel recognized and valued.

My students need "brain breaks" throughout the day to refocus their energy and build mindfulness. A piano is the perfect instrument to make this happen. Silly, but effective songs such as "The Hokey Pokey" and "Head Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" get students laughing, moving, and singing along. Soon after, they are surprisingly ready to learn with an increased attention span and strong sense of purpose.

I want to use the piano as a powerful tool and symbol to build leadership where courage, confidence, and a growth mindset are demonstrated and encouraged! A number of students in my class are taking piano lessons and have shown interest in performing for their peers. In addition, others have inquired about learning how to play and are very curious about reading music and learning their favorite songs.

Giving the gift of music to my students will open their hearts and minds and inspire them to do amazing things! A classroom piano is the instrument they need to have this gift.
