My students need stories that build tolerance. Students also need Playstix and blocks to bring these skills to life.

My Students

I teach 24 enthusiastic Kindergarten students. It is the first classroom experience for many of my students. They are at an age where art, movement, and dramatic play are the most meaningful and exciting times of the day. So many concepts can be reinforced during these times. My students come from many different cultural backgrounds. Some of my students come from low income families who qualify for free or reduced price lunch, some have special needs and have an Individualized Education Plan, and others are second language learners. This diverse group of learners use art as a tool to express learning through fine motor development, personal development, and imagination.

My Project

I am requesting Building Character Book Set, Learning to Get Along Book Set, and stories about being different to help increase awareness of other people and cultures—and celebrate diversity. These stories will help my students understand that being a good citizen involves following rules, not judging people by the color of their skin or what they like to eat, as well as taking turns, and being honest.

I am also requesting Building Blocks set and Playstix to give my students many opportunities to practice sharing, getting along, and resolving conflicts during free play center time.

A teacher can learn so much by watching young children play together. Since a major emphasis in Kindergarten is learning to socialize, it is so important to teach values in everyday terms kids can really relate to! It is also important to give them them every opportunity to practice these skills.

I believe the most important learning happens when children are given a chance to play! When children play together in a structured environment, they learn to accept that everyone has different qualities, and that it is OK to be different.
