This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students are challenged by the bleakness of their surroundings in their neighborhood. They need to see beyond it and aspire see the world beyond Echo Park.
My students are amazing.
That's the most important. They are priceless. However, some students backgrounds and surroundings have prevented them from seeing themselves as they priceless gifts they are. I've had homeless kids who lived in shelters, and I've had professional parents. But, the wonderful thing about the school is that despite us being labeled as an impoverished school, our Magnet School is high performing. This shows me, and the world that if you believe in these students enough, you can produce change. All they need is to be believed in, to stop making excuses for why they should fail, and set up the highest expectations.
My Project
I love teaching First Grade. I am able to go through a rich curriculum which teaches us about Native Americans and their invaluable contributions, animals from around the world and their different habitats.
Instead of going to the computer lab in the next building to print out a picture of a tiger, or just simple showing them a picture of a tiger in a book, I would like to show them detailed images, video clips. This would make the idea of science real to the students. I know that once students really see this, it would come to life for them, sparking their interest even more, and setting them up to be the Scientists of the Future!
This project is so important because I believe that every classroom deserves a good working computer.
In these past 20 years, since the dawn of technology, our own understanding of new concepts has increased tremendously. I want to simply introduce my First Grade Students to this at an early age. As a Math and Science Scholars, they are our future leaders in these areas.
