My Students
I have 130 sixth grade students from all different socioeconomic backgrounds. We are a Title I school where over 75% of the students receive free or reduced-price meals. Creating a safe and comfortable classroom is important to me and will greatly impact my students.
My new incoming sixth-graders come from a wide range of reading abilities.
I want to do all that I can to boost my students learning. We want to work more with reading comprehension and strategies that can be added to my students’ toolbox to be used for the rest of their school careers. We believe that we can work on strengthening our comprehension in geography class by using Scholastic magazines with events and topics that are happening around the world.
My Project
My students and I are asking for Scholastic magazines to help build reading comprehension skills. I have chosen a magazine subscription to Junior Scholastic. It will allow me to cover the range of reading abilities I will have in my classroom. Our goal this year is to work together with their ELA class to build skills that the students will need for the remainder of their school lives and beyond. It is my hope to use these magazines to show my students that there are millions of kids just like them around the world. Each article will give us a small glimpse of what life is like for people in different regions of the world.
