My students need 25 Weekly Reader subscriptions and the "Around the World Fact Finder" to learn more about the world in a relevant way.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Sykes's classroom raised $185

My Students
Second graders find it difficult to imagine the world outside their neighborhood. Our social studies curriculum focuses on how communities are alike and different, a difficult concept for students with little exposure of the rest of the world.
My students attend a suburban public school North Carolina with a close to 35% free and reduced lunch rate.
They have limited social studies experiences, and I'm looking for ways to bring authentic non-fiction home through weekly current-event magazines and an in-class research station.
My Project
With a subscription to Weekly Reader, my students will have access to the world's current events. Each week, they can take their copy of the magazine home to share with their families, reinforcing the importance of developmentally appropriate and relevant non-fiction reading material. Combined with the in-class research station, where students explore geographic and climate features, as well as people and cultures around the world.
Funding this project helps to provide a class of second grade students another view of the world, and a richer understanding of the people who share our world.
The impact of this study will continue throughout their lives.
