This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students learn best when they ask their own questions, set their own goals and can connect their learning to the real world. Inquiry based learning develops the imagination, critical thinking skills, creativity, cognitive skills, collaboration and allows children to appreciate other points-of-view. Currently, I am trying to provide these learning skills while students are learning at home.
I teach a group of third grade, gifted students in an inner-city school in a large metropolitan city.
A large percentage of students at my school come from low-income households and thus all students have access to the free lunch program. Many of my students do not have the necessary tools including reliable technology or even reading materials at home to support their Distance Learning.
My Project
Engaging books with interesting characters are powerful tools! Not only do books expose students to situations they have never experienced, and places far and near that they have never been to before, but they also provide models that my students can emulate in their own reading and writing. Powerful discussions take place around the stories we read and the books inspire students to write their own stories with similar characters and problems.
My students need access to the tools that will make them better readers and writers.
These powerful tools are the books themselves and the laminating sheets will allow me to protect the precious pages while I highlight the words the authors wrote to make the text stand out for my students. We need these books that I can read aloud to them, that they can read independently, and that they can go back and refer to as they are reading and writing. Books = the world!
