My students want to see the world! We would like access to technology that will allow us to visit places virtually and speak with other people via web cam.
I currently teach below-level 8th graders in a high poverty middle school.
While some of my students are on Special Education plans, many do not qualify for Special Education services despite their struggles to learn. They are in danger of failing multiple courses (or worse, dropping out completely) if I can not help them become better readers. I would like to use technology to help them see the world they've never experienced in person.
My Project
My students often feel rejected and displaced. They are below-level readers who have felt little academic success. They do not always relate well to their higher-performing peers, and we are housed in a single grade level building. I have created a plan with a lower level teacher to have my students serve as reading mentors for her K-2 students. This will give my students reading practice as they prepare to help the younger children while bolstering their confidence. We'd like to use web cams so that the students can see one another and build a relationship. My students currently have access to computers, but they do not have access to a web cam. We will need a computer with a web cam to make this project more exciting. Bus travel is expensive and slow, so this seems a logical way to make face-to-face contact possible.
My students are creative and caring, but they need to find their niche in the world of academia.
It is my hope that a project like this could give them the confidence they need before they move on to the high school. I firmly believe that some extra confidence will help keep some of these kids in school and prevent them from dropping out.
