My Students

Marcus Tullius Cicero - If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need. Children need to learn to appreciate nature. Being outdoors is not always practical with young children, so bringing the outdoors indoors will give students a chance to explore nature.

My K-5th grade Title I public school is in a rural area located a few miles from the beautiful coast of NC.

We serve many English as a Second Language students. As in most rural communities, jobs are scarce and money is tight. With state-wide district cuts, we must make the most of our supplies. My Kindergarten students are very aware of their coastal surroundings and have learned that they must work towards keeping their community environmentally clean for the abundant wildlife and natural resources. I want my students to appreciate beauty in nature and to create this natural beauty in their assignments and projects. They learn best when they can apply their creative skills to all aspects of their learning. They are learning that every little bit they do counts towards a better tomorrow for everyone.

My Project

My students need a Natural Cedar Stool to complete the set we have in our classroom. These stools are great for the study of trees and the environment. We study the trees rings and make note of how the tree grew during those periods. We can tell if there was a drought or some other hardship or if the tree grew readily. My students also need 2 Earthbox Juniors, for classroom use. They are the perfect size to put along our huge window sill so that we can observe our plants growing. We also need 2 gardening tool sets for students to use when they tend their indoor garden. The table top magnifier will be used to explore plants and seeds. I want my students to learn to care about nature and plants. My quote says that all we need is a library and a garden to be happy. I know that my students need more: they need caring people around them and also they need to become educated and develop a love of people and nature. I think that will give them so much in their lives.

Please help my students bring the outside inside.

Our classroom is a learning place. A place where children and plants can grow together. Developing a love for nature and the environment will give my students a solid foundation as they grow into the caretakers of our world.
