My students need a salt water aquarium in order to study ocean creatures up close.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. F.'s classroom raised $305
This project is fully funded
My Students
If we can't take First graders to the ocean, then we will bring the ocean to them! Our students will be studying prehistory and the ancient sea creatures of the Paleozoic era. A salt water aquarium will help them understand how sea animals move, eat and defend themselves.
We have a diverse class of 31 First graders.
Most of our students live in the urban area. There are many different academic abilities, economic levels, and nationalities in our class. And of course, there are many personalities- 31 to be exact! We are an expeditionary school, which means our students learn by doing and seeing. Much of our work is completed on field studies. For our first expedition, we will study the ocean, however, we live 8 hours from the shore! In addition to the academic benefits, bringing the ocean to the classroom will allow first graders to appreciate the fragility of life.
My Project
The salt water aquarium will enhance first graders' understandings of ocean life. They will be writing informational brochures about ancient sea creatures. Observing live animals will allow them to witness the wonders of the ocean and then record this information in the brochures they write. Students will also be writing poetry and creating dances about sea creatures. Being able to see how animals move, eat and defend themselves will bring rich discussion to the classroom; enhancing children's vocabularies and the quality of their movements.
As children learn about sea animals, they will also learn about their responsibilities to the earth as human beings.
They will understand the need for humans to care for the earth and it's creatures.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
More than half of students from low‑income households
