This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live on the far southeast area of Chicago. An area of the city that most people don't know about or forget about. Our area is the most polluted area of the city. We are struggling with pet coke dumping, air quality which has led to a high rate of asthma, destruction of wildlife and inability to garden due to soil contamination. The kids are diverse in every way, culturally, socially & academically. I will have about 120 students, and about 40 students in each of my classes. Because science is an inclusion class, this is a class where everyone is welcome. I am worried my students will be discouraged by a class so large in a content that requires self control and utilitazation of math and reading skills with no additional support other than myself. I am aiming to create something really special where everyone can be comfortable working together in a large setting learning new information. Particularly learning about how to combine technology of computing & aquaponics and environmental sciences to become globally aware and make positive difference in the environment and in their health now and then as a future generation.

My Project

I am asking for an aquaponics kit that I can install on an existing aquarium and teach student how they can use the technology of aquaponics to grow healthy edible plants indoors away from contaminated soil and safe from the freezing cold Chicago winters. A testing kit where they can learn chemistry & citizen sciences through monitoring the chemical balances of the aquarium and aquaponic table. I am also asking for you to help me acquire a number of live organisms to replenish my existing aquariums where students will learn about the various ecosystems and biomes around the world and how things need to be in order to preserve the organisms that they love. And from another perspective, students would learn compassion and responsibility through caring for the classroom organisms.
