Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Sunshine Gardens needs the sun to shine so our garden can promote our spirit. We need extra help as the sun gods are dim in our area!I am a first grade teacher in South San Francisco and teach 80% of second language learners. Our families are low income, as well as not very knowledgeable with the English language. I have always believed that science is an important subject to be taught to young students, yet our school district, as well as the state of California, does not share my feelings.
The biggest obstacle my students face is their financial family situation. Many students share beds and rooms with their siblings and our classroom seems to be a "safe haven" with many critters and interesting science manipulatives. As a full-time mother and first grade teacher, my financial resources are very limited. This wish list could benefit 60 first graders at our school site, as well as enhance our knowledge of plants and gardens.
In the past I have received garden tools for the outside part of our "Sunshine Garden." Now I am trying to obtain resources which can be used inside the classroom and shared with our other first grades to enhance the plant/garden learning experience. Many of our young students enjoy hands-on learning (ie. puzzles, challenging games, etc...), yet these resources are an expense to the teachers and are not purchased often.
Our self-made "Garden Squad" meets weekly to enhance the outside part of our school garden. I firmly believe that manipulatives which can be used in the winter months will define and broaden my students knowledge of both plants, and the many topics which go with this first grade science unit.
