My Students
How do you keep 51 second graders interested in learning math? Well, if you can somehow combine numbers with games and technology, you'll most likely end up with a group of kids who are BEYOND excited about math!
I teach 2nd grade at a small suburban school in Washington.
My school is designated as a high-poverty school with many students receiving free/reduced priced meals because of their socioeconomic situation. If you were to come visit, however, you would never know that. You would see students who love learning and want to do their very best. This year, I will be the designated science and mathematics teacher for about 50 second graders. My classroom of 7 and 8 year olds is always made up students who have a wide variety of abilities, interests, and challenges. This includes learning support students, English language learners, and academically gifted students. I am here to teach them all and give them the best education.
My Project
I am requesting 4 Osmo Numbers Games. "What is an Osmo?" you might ask. Osmo was selected as one of Time Magazine's top inventions of 2014. Osmo comes with a device that snaps onto an iPad and allows the kids to play different learning games. Each game requires students to work together to solve different problems. The cool thing about Osmo is that the kids aren't actually using the touch screen of the iPad! They are using actual objects, like number tiles or dice tiles, to physically solve puzzles and problems! The Osmo device that is snapped onto the iPad uses the iPad's camera to transfer the work the kids are doing onto the screen! It is truly a beautiful combination of technology and real, tangible experiences! We will use the Osmo Numbers Games in our math workshop every single day.
With these amazing resources, students will experience the joy and excitement of mathematics!
Think about it: second graders are 7 and 8 years old. Kids at this age want EVERYTHING to be fun and exciting. YOU can help give them gift of having SO MUCH FUN at school, while also planting the seed of becoming a life-long learner in each child. Thank you for reading my proposal!
