Bringing the Economy into the Classroom

My students need supplies to start a classroom economy including a cash box, paper to make money, and other organizational tools!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Laidler's classroom raised $276

This project is fully funded

We are learning how to earn money, save money and spend money all in fourth grade. Most people learn their "money skills" at home, but now you have a chance to fund a project that will allow students to learn and live it everyday in 4th grade. I teach in a low income area on the south side of Chicago. Poverty is a fact of life in the neighborhood, but with this classroom economy the skills of accounting for money, earning money for responsibilities both academic and jobs in the classroom, and then the chance to spend and SAVE money will all be taught daily. Most of my students' do not have a model of how to use a bank account, track income and spending, or budget, this can change with your generosity to fund this project. I have a bachelor's degree in finance and I see the need for the project in my classroom and the community.

These simple supplies will allow me to start the economy that has so many benefits to my students and our classroom. Students are actively involved in a year-long study of economics where they earn credits and debits while maintaining a class bank and store. The unit is cross-curricular: students learn major-principles concepts, as well as use math skills on a daily basis. This system teaches the responsibility of money both earning and spending on necessities and extras.

The resources are mostly renewable for the classroom and future classrooms! I need color paper to print the money, notebooks for students to track debits and credits, a cashbox and date stamp for the store cashier.

You can donate to a project that will have a life lesson and a lifetime lesson. Teaching responsibilities with money is a skill that is valuable even at an early age.
