Bringing the Diary of Anne Frank to the Middle School Stage
My students need several books about Anne Frank including a photo biography, a biography adapted for lower-level readers, a book about accents, a handbook for beginning theatre students, 10 dictionaries, a 12 pack of highlighters, and a 12 pack of mechanical pencils.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Speech/Theatre teacher in an urban, low-income school district. We are going into our second year of an innovative drama program that focuses on giving students of poverty the skills needed to become successful adults. Bringing “Diary of Anne Frank” to the stage will allow our students to not only hone their speaking skills, but increase their script analysis and reading comprehension.
My students cannot wait to tackle our fall play - "The Diary of Anne Frank" which aligns with our 8th grade curriculum. However, we lack the appropriate study guides to prepare them for a stage production.
This project will teach our theatre children to do text analysis - something that will not only help them as performers but prepare them for high school literature classes.
If our students had study materials adjusted to various reading levels, dictionaries, books about preparing for a role, and materials to mark their script, they could become better performers and public speakers.
