Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Sixty-four sixth graders come to me daily for literary guidance at MS 118, an urban public school in the heart of the Bronx.
It is my dream to introduce my students to William Shakespeare through "Romeo and Juliet". This play brings friendship, love, and feuding together, all issues that my students experience first hand.
While this may seem ambitious for sixth graders, I was first introduced to "Romeo and Juliet" by my sixth grade English teacher, growing up in a suburb in North Carolina. As many of my students are first or second generation immigrants, they do not necessarily have access to the same resources I did as a sixth grader, nor have they been held up to the same expectations. Understanding, appreciating, and loving Shakespeare will help my students be successful when they encounter him later in high school and college.
As I have a theatre background and have worked in Shakespeare camps for youth throughout college, I know with your help I can bring this story to life for all of my students. As the language will be difficult at first, having side-to-side editions that have both Shakespeare's language paired with contemporary (but not dumbed down) language will make the story accessible to all.
I need one copy of "Romeo and Juliet" for each student so they can use them both in and out of class as they delve into the story and create and present their own versions of their favorite scenes. You will help my students be more successful in high school and college as I share with them the passion for Shakespeare my sixth grade teacher gave me.
