Bringing the Bard to Life

My students need 80 thrift copies of "Romeo and Juliet", 4 copies of the Folger edition, and 1 teacher's guide.

I teach low-scoring 8th graders the disciplines of reading and writing in a struggling high-need school. Two years ago, I taught many of them in 6th grade, and, last year, I taught many of them again in 7th grade.

As I was explaining irony last month, I told the story of Romeo and Juliet. My students, many of whom began the year reading two or three grade levels below average, were riveted by the tale. They asked if we could end the year studying the play. I told them it would be the hardest task we've undertaken in the entire three years that I've taught them. They said, "All right. Let's do it."

Shakespeare wrote plays to be acted; so, we will do just that. We will memorize everything from the Bard's blank verse to the facts of his life and the historical setting in which it took place. Every student needs a personal copy of the play--for marking and memorizing at home--and we need some Folger editions and a teacher's guide to aid us in the classroom. At the end of May, students will present memorized portions of the play--and they will actually understand these portions--after doing some of the hardest studying of their lives.

Your help will equip students to test how much hard work can accomplish. These are "Basic" students, but you will empower them to become the only 8th graders in town who enjoy and understand Shakespeare. Please: send my students to high school with this powerful final project.
