Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Technology is key in today's world and our students in South Central are falling behind. My students aren't fortunate enough to have access to a computer lab or library and high demand is making it more and more necessary to have. New computers are rare on our campus but not impossible.
One hundred percent of my students are minorities who deal with gangs, drugs, and violence on a daily basis.
School is not a punishment, but an escape from the problems of our troubled city. Despite the troubles our students face on a daily basis, on their way to school in the morning or on their way home after school, their bright faces and hopeful smiles keep our school motivated and thriving.
Never will you meet students with so little material but so much perseverance and hope. Thanks to these young minds, our school has become a safe haven for some and a beacon of hope for many more who now believe they may go to college. Walking down the hall you will see the ex-gang banger or the former tagger... did I mention they have 3.0 GPA now? Our students drive our teachers and keep us coming back for more. I can imagine teaching nowhere else and with no other group of students.
My Project
Power Points, essays, projects, and research. All those things will be made possible and more accessible with the acquisition of these laptops. Most of my students do not have computers or Internet access at home and working at school becomes challenging when students must battle over computer access. Four $99 laptops may not seem like much, but in a school where six screens are hooked to one computer, these laptops will mean disadvantaged students having access to technology previously seen as a myth to them.
We need your help.
These computers will be shared across departments and benefit hundreds of students this year alone. I'm tired of telling my students they can type up their papers at the library and print them before school. Help our students gain the necessary access to technology in today's age! Help our students understand that urban schools can make it, too.
