My Students
What Makes My Students Special?
When I first started at Pershing Middle School 18 years ago.
I was a fairly new teacher. I was raring to go and ready to change lives! I was determined to make a difference. I almost quit in December of that same year. My school is located in Houston, Texas and is Title One (1) and Title Three (3). This means that more than half of my students have free/reduced lunch and that we have a large enough population of students that are LEP (Limited English Proficient.) that we receive federal monies from the government. Being brought up in a middle class family with middle class values nor my college teaching classes prepared me for dealing with the problems that would come from teaching at a Title One (1) and Title (3) school.
I learned that they world in which I grew up did not mirror theirs and that the playing field was not level. What I love most about my school that almost had me quit in December of the first year is what I am most proud of now in my 18th year - DIVERSITY!
My Project
I do a lot of group work, stations and am trying to add in a technology piece to my curriculum. We had some damage to our school last year and many of my students were displaced. Unfortunately, replacing technology has been low on the priority list for my school and for the parents of some of my students. Although totally understandable, it's sad.
I would like to have an in class set of Chromebooks with a charging cart that locks so that I may use technology daily with my students.
Not only in a lesson, but for students who complete work first to use to extend their lessons and for students who are visual and auditory learners. The amount of educational sites available grows daily and help make learning more enjoyable and sometime provide that "aha" moment.
I would also use these Chromebooks for after school tutorials for students need a little more guidance or for use by students who need computers to complete assignments from any class that cannot be completed at home.
