Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Unfortunately, a typical day in my classroom involves a lot of fighting for our classrooms most valuable resources; our two old desktop computers. I hope to change that.
My students live in The South Bronx, NY.
Our congressional district is the poorest in the nation. Close to 40% of the population lives below the poverty line. The neighborhood is exactly as you would imagine it. All the social problems that stem from poverty are present as well.
My students are first generation immigrants. Many of their parents are barely literate. Computer literacy is unheard of. My school is aiming to prepare these students for real world challenges. Technological literacy is essential.
My Project
My students will be on a shared schedule (much in the same way they share the 2 desktop computers). Some students are mandated to to remediation work on the desktop computers, so the laptop will be more available. Students will use it independently, with a buddy, or in a group setting. Independent time might even be used as a reward for focused work or good behavior.
My students are disadvantaged.
This gift will help level the playing field. It will allow them to have the same access to education and learning as students from much better economic backgrounds. The Internet is the great socioeconomic equalizer.
