This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students thrive with "non-traditional" opportunities to learn. I often say, "a carpenter wouldn't go to the job with just one tool, just like you need many different tools (math strategies) to solve math problems, pick which works best". My job is to give them all the tools that they need.
I teach 125 5th grade math students in a high poverty city.
Many of my students are English Language Learners who require a variety of teaching styles. My students are excited to learn but also get easily frustrated so I try to keep things as active and enjoyable as possible.
Technology is lacking at my school. My current class only has one school computer which is very old and not reliable. Daily I bring in my own laptop so that I can have a dependable device to use for my math lessons.
My Project
During daily lessons, I attempt to utilize many methods including showing videos from Kahn Academy, web based vocabulary activities, and etc. The introduction of the tablets to my classes would make a world of a difference. Students would be able to access many sites, giving them hands on leaning experiences. I would like to incorporate the tables into my learning centers. If a child is struggling with a topic they could access a tutorial on the topic, extra practice or even a specific assignment. They could also use the tablets to play a variety of approved math games. The tablets would be great to differentiate my lessons for all of my students.
Through the use of the Fire Tablets in my class, I envision a learning environment that excites students.
Students will be able to access a variety of learning opportunities suited for their unique learning styles. They will also be able to work at their own pace and take learning into their own control.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
