I work in a low-income school and our program is an at-risk Pre-K. At-risk factors include low-income, single family homes, incarcerated parent, English as a second language, etc. 32% of my students also qualify for my program by needing an IEP to help to with their academic, social, and health needs.
I have two sessions, AM and PM Pre-K classes, with 40 students total.
My students range in age from 3-5 years, and are energetic, talkative, caring, and social. Every student deserves enough hands-on materials to help them learn the skills and concepts necessary to be successful in Kindergarten.
My Project
"Young children live in a world of interactive media. They are growing up at ease with digital devices that are rapidly becoming the tools of the culture at home, at school, at work, and in the community." (NAEYC) Even at a very young age, students are motivated and excited about activities that involve technology.
I want my students to be able to use online programs and apps to enhance their pre-writing skills and bring their written work (and illustrations) to life.
Students will be able to use the iPads individually or in pairs for instruction as they work together to create stories using various iPad programs. By adding in iPads to our curriculum, it will bring life to the students work by moving beyond simple, one-dimensional creations and provide students with the opportunity to interact in real time with information, concepts, and lessons. Students can work together to create the general theme of a story, but use the technology resources to add photos, videos, audio, and text. Once our stories are created we will be able to share our digital works with families as well. This project will allow students to work on Illinois Early Learning standards in the areas of social-emotional, fine motor, literacy, technology, and the arts.
