My students need a visual presenter and a 3D map so that they can actually see and not just imagine the science around them.

My Students
"Tell me and I may forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand." With all of the technology that we have today, my students should not be forced to base all of their science knowledge on text alone. They need to see that science is fun, interactive, visual, and hands-on!
My students are part of an all girls middle and high school in urban New York.
Many of these girls are forced to grow up quicker than they should due to stigmas and/or family obligations. Unfortunately, they will see many of their friends, from their neighborhoods, incarcerated, become pregnant and drop out of school, or worse. For many of them, education will be their only escape from a world full of poverty and crime. Our school demonstrates to these girls that, yes, they can achieve, and yes, they can exceed even their own expectations; that women, who look like them and come from the same neighborhood as them, are highly skilled and highly trained professionals who, by working hard, have achieved a better life for themselves and are happy.
My Project
First, I am requesting topographic maps, because it is hard for urban girls to visualize mountainous landforms and their features. These maps are not only 3D but they are something tangible that the girls will be able to remember. I am also requesting an ELMO TT-02RX visual presenter to bring the world of science to life in my classroom. In a classroom of 30 girls, where there's not always enough books to go around, a visual presenter will make sure that each girl has an equal opportunity to achieve. With this presenter, I will be able to place text or a picture on the pad and have it projected to a screen. Better yet, I can dissect a flower or study a live insect and every girl will be able to see, visually, not just with the mind's eye, at the same time, what is happening. This opens the class up to more engaging, rigorous discussions, and experiments in real time.
I am a believer in hands-on science.
I know that these materials will help bring science to life for my girls. This means more involvement and more understanding thus higher test scores and in my perfect world, more female scientist.
