My students need earth science videos to check out and watch at home. This not only enriches understanding, but also encourages interest/discussions with their families!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I can't take my students to watch volcanoes, see plate tectonics in action, study mines, and visit geologic sites. But... my students can bring all of that into their homes with videos they can check out from our (future) video library!
Just like all other kids, my students LOVE learning (when we teachers make it worthwhile)!
They work everyday in collaborative groups, sharing amazing strategies and ideas that even adults can't come up with. Our school, whose mission includes bilingualism and social justice, is located in an urban neighborhood. We are a new pilot school within the school district, allowing us certain autonomies, which include curriculum. Historically, most families chose to bus their children about 1 hour outside of their community in search of better schools. However, ever since the opening of our site, we have been able to celebrate a "homecoming" of sorts, providing families with a quality school within their community.
My Project
Science is arguably one of the most difficult and dreaded subjects for many students. No wonder, if it is only taught through books. Hands-on experiments make a difference, but simply creating a miniature volcano, or simulating plate tectonics with plastic pieces, or designing a river model with sand just do not display the magnitude or the raw energy of what really goes on with our planet! So what supplemental materials are needed? Videos! We may not have the luxury of time to show videos within one school period. However, by providing a video library of earth science videos to check out, students can watch them at home! This will help students to understand visually the various earth processes and concepts. An unexpected side effect might be that family members become interested such that science discussions will take place at home!
Think of that science class where you just heard a whole lot of confusing vocabulary words and lists of concepts, but you had no real understanding of what they looked like or what they meant.
Now imagine having had animated visuals to help you understand those words and concepts. Students today don't need to imagine, if you help to fund this project. This will only be a starter collection. We want to add National Geographic titles soon! Please help us get started!
