My students need a novel that will help them see the relevance and interconnectedness of scientific topics in AP Biology.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Tysiak's classroom raised $660

My Students
My students LOVE to learn about science. They get excited watching videos, seeing pictures, and hearing interesting statistics. Still, it is always difficult to learn all of the vocabulary and make the connections required to fully understand AP Biology.
My students come from all over our city (about 300 different middle/elementary schools) and help create a diverse and accepting school environment.
85% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch. These students love learning about science and investigating the hows and whys of the living world. Even more so, they love performing experiments and seeing these processes at work in front of their own eyes.
My Project
My students will read "A Planet of Viruses" as a supplemental activity to class. They will participate in discussions about what they found most interesting and how it connects to the content they are being asked to master. This well written novel is both extremely accessible and informational.Details about a variety of viruses and their role in the living world are presented. The big ideas around which AP Biology is centered are also a common theme in this novel and the text helps emphasize the same vocabulary that we try to stress in class.
This novel will be an amazing source of information for students while helping them make the connections between the massive amounts of content and thematic ideas of AP Biology.I have no doubt that this will make a substantial difference in student mastery and while also piquing student interest and revitalizing their love for learning science.
