Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an energetic bunch of fifth graders who love to learn and come to school. They love technology and jump at the chance to use the single computer in our classroom.
Due to a lack of resources at home and at school many of my students rarely have the opportunity to use computers and other technology.
Most come from families where poverty, language barriers and everyday simple luxuries that we take for granted are few. They face many struggles in and out of school: 98% of the students in my school qualify for free lunch, 78% speak English as a second language and a handful of my students have a variety of learning disabilities. Many entered my classroom far below grade level. My students view school as a safe haven and the path to a better life. Every child deserves a high quality education and I am determined to give each student the best education possible.
My Project
The Mimio Board that I propose will help my students gain knowledge of technology and enable them to catch up academically. As I bridge the gap between the grade level material that they need to know and their missing schema, the Mimio Board will serve as an intermediary. The Mimio Board allows me to project images and allows students to interact with those images, turning our whiteboard into an interactive computer screen. Anything that can be done on a computer can be done with the Mimio system. For example, during Writing Workshop students can help classmates edit other students’ writing that has been scanned into the computer and projected onto the board. During Math, students can use large Math manipulatives (such as base ten blocks and fraction tiles) to understand difficult concepts. The opportunities across all subjects are endless.
As a teacher, I can capture the attention of all of my students when teaching them difficult material using the Mimio.
My students will flourish academically, have fun learning and will become more skilled and knowledgeable about computers as they learn to navigate through the computer on the large whiteboard as a class.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
