This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My elementary school has a history of competing in STEAM competitions through robotics. We have not been able to do this for several years and would love to get back to showing the community the amazing things our students are capable of. Adding robotics as an afterschool club will help boost morale around campus.
According to the National Afterschool Association, "The engineering design process encourages persistence." Many students struggle with motivation at school or do not see how the skills they are learning will benefit them into the future.
Through robotics children are challenged to work collaboratively, they learn a new way to express themselves, and they can explore the connections between computational thinking and the cognitive skills developed in early childhood (NAA, 2019).
One problem we are having is the age of the robots we currently have. These robots have been "retired" by LEGO and a whole new set of robots has been released. What is exciting is we have some robots for younger children that were funded through DonorsChoose but need sets for our older students so they can bridge into secondary and keep interest high.
