Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a special education class of kinder through fifth graders. My special education program is a blended push-in/pull-out program which means that some students come into my special education classroom and learn in small groups while other students receive their supports in the General Education classroom while working with their teacher and typically developing peers.
Our school is just blocks away from the site of the tragic shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.
Our school is in the most southern part of Silicon Valley with rural and agricultural lands surrounding our school's neighborhood. Our school also has a dual-immersion Spanish/English program which several of my students participate in. My classroom includes students of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
My Project
My students need a class subscription for Scholastic News. This magazine connects current events to the curriculum while helping students practice their reading skills. This magazine will enhance our learning experience by giving us an interesting resource to get students excited about learning.
I want to foster my students' love of learning.
Scholastic News will help keep students excited about reading nonfiction articles as well as keep them up to date with current events. We need multiple grade levels because we have six grade levels in my special education classroom and work in small groups on reading skills. Three high-interest editions of Scholastic News each week will help keep my students excited about learning.
