Bringing Play All the Way to 2nd Grade!

My Project

My second graders work hard all day — but they also need time to play, build, and decompress. This project will bring a high-quality building block set into our classroom so students have a creative, calming outlet during transitions, indoor recess, and self-regulation breaks.

I teach a classroom full of energetic, imaginative second graders who are learning how to navigate both academics and emotions.

Our school is a Title I public school in North Carolina, and many of my students face challenges outside of the classroom.

Even so, they show up every day ready to grow. They are curious, creative, and full of big feelings — and I believe giving them time and space to play is just as valuable as any textbook.

To support social-emotional development and creativity in the classroom, we are requesting:

A durable building block set with various shapes and sizes

These materials will be used during:

Calm-down time for students who need a break

Early finishers who need a quiet, hands-on activity

Indoor recess and free choice centers

Partner-building time to support collaboration and communication skills

Play isn't just for kindergarteners — it’s a powerful tool for emotional regulation, creativity, and social skills in 2nd grade too. Building with blocks helps students practice patience, problem-solving, and cooperation, while also giving their minds a break from structured learning.

This project will bring the joy and benefits of open-ended play into our classroom routine, helping students stay balanced, focused, and connected to one another.
