Bringing Out Their BEST With Incentives and Rewards
My students need rewards to promote positive change for a successful future: stickers, behavior charts, spider rings, cut-out notes of recognition for home, and edibles.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Who, no matter how young or old, doesn't thrive with the recognition of good work, good behavior, acts of kindness, effort, and persistence? My own 6th graders thrive on praise and recognition, too. Unfortunately, many in the past have been noticed only for misbehavior.
My 6th graders thrive on positive praise; however, many need help developing character traits such as kindness, persistence in effort, and for learning for learning's sake and a curiosity about the world around them.
These traits must be nourished, but just like anything of real worth, students need time to flourish.
Tangible rewards help in this; these are not jaded or hard to reach teenagers, but young kids--and so many of them face grown-up issues like poverty, violence, homelessness, and feelings of hopelessness. These children are our future and what better way to mold our future than with incentives to promote the positive and alter, redirect, and change negative behaviors? In addition, so many students who try each day to do the right thing are overlooked because of other students' vying for the teacher's attention with misbehavior. Students doing all of the right things need to be noticed and celebrated, too.
My Project
Students will develop and understand classroom and school rules and procedures and will also understand exactly which traits in ones' character leads to success in life. Students will have behavior charts and will work toward tangibles as rewards for behavior; students will also be given recognition for demonstrating strength of character, helping others, persistence and effort in class, being caring, a leader, and etc. The incentives will last the year and be shared with all 100 of the 6th graders in our school. Please do keep in mind the reality of my students' lives because the number of rewards might seem excessive in a suburban school, but undoing years of behaviors that need to be redirected in order to be successful in life takes Herculean effort: these rewards will provide the positive reinforcement so many have never had. After all, they are 11 and 12 year olds--spider rings, temporary tattoos, pencils, edibles--trinkets linked to behavior to change the future for 100 kids!
Promoting the positive in children and working to help them see their own potential with recognition for being and doing their best is life altering; tangible rewards for doing the right thing is a once in a lifetime opportunity at 11 and 12.
This is a pivotal time in their lives when one CAN change negative behaviors when good behavior is coupled with positive praise.
And, what better way to mold our students using incentives to promote change than to deal with these behaviors later in life?
