Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are just turning 5. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting. Some of the students have special learning needs; many are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line, and rely on our free meal plan for their child's breakfast and lunch.

Our school is a high poverty, Title I school, with high expectations for all.

Each day we practice letters, phonics and sight words. We study science, social studies, and incorporate art daily. At the end of the school day, the children are so excited to see their parents and tell them all the things they did at school. The parents are very supportive, and enjoy spending time with their little ones, reading stories and learning new things.

My Project

Our school is located in a suburban part of a large metropolitan city. We would like for our kindergarten yard area to be a garden oasis, where our students can get away from the noise, heat, and congestion of the city. We envision creating a green space with flowers and seating. In this space, students could read, draw, or write while surrounded by nature. They could also grow flowers and vegetables, learning the basics of gardening.

Our class is working with two other classes to enhance our kindergarten yard and turn it into a student-centered learning environment.

We were inspired by the Student-Centered Learning Environment Innovation Challenge winning project: Outdoor Student Centered Nature Environment. Each class is focusing on one area, and when completed, these three areas will come together to make a beautiful learning space for all our students.

For this project, I am requesting a picnic table for children to sit and talk together, read, or even draw pictures or write in journals. Decorative pots and soil would be used to grow flowers and flowering plants, which would encourage butterflies, caterpillars and ladybugs to come to the area. A humming bird feeder would encourage birds to visit as well. Garden tools, gloves and a watering hose would be used by the students to maintain the garden. As children spend time in this area, enjoying the plants and animals, they are leaning about the environment through observation.

We would like to thank the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for supporting student centered learning projects. Our “Kinder-Garden” and observation areas will be essential to the discussion of nature among our students and for promoting science in education.
