Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What would you be able to learn from vomit? Your generosity will allow my students to study food webs by examining the regurgitated (and sterile) pellets from owls, which contain entire skeletons of mice, voles, and other rodents. This highly engaging activity never fails to stir student interest.

I teach in an inner-city, urban public school where over 50% of the students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunches, the basic measurement of poverty.

My students come to the classroom burdened with problems from home, and saddled with the history of a spotty educational experience thus far. They yearn for any type of engaging, non-textbook learning activities.

My Project

This lab is a rigorous, high-inquiry activity that allows students to learn about food chains, predator/prey relationships, and digestive systems through an analysis of owl pellets. After whetting their appetites by studying the digestive system of the common barn owl, they will dissect an owl pellet to extract the skeleton contained inside. The students will then reconstruct the skeletons on cardboard, learning about skeletal anatomy and adaptations. Hand lenses are extremely useful when trying to sort through mouse rib bones! The post lab allows students to retrace the last path of their skeleton, as they learn about food webs.

Drawing and detailing their webs often allows artistic students to shine through, and I've always been able to get a 100% return rate for this assignment in the past.

This lab has empowered my students with a lasting, thorough comprehension of their learning standards, a level of understanding essential in preparing them for college and allowing them to be scientifically literate in an age of growing ecological concerns.
