My students need to experience different outdoor environment simulations by observing diverse terrariums to enable them to study biodiversity and conserve their environment.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school has students from pre-k through sixth grade. Approximately seventy percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. We also have a high English Language Learner population. Many of our students come from immigrant families and speak a second language at home.
My goal is to help students understand the importance of accurate measurements when collecting data for a science investigation.
My students are a curious group of incoming fifth graders who are excited about science. They are looking forward to science investigations and their curiosity is quite infectious. One of my goals this year is to integrating science and math to create a successful STEM classroom.
My Project
My students love science! Living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, my students can't relate to a lush, green forest environment. I would love to expose my students to different environments and the plant life they foster. I plan to use terrariums to simulate a forest floor, carnivorous plant habitat and desert plants to begin with.
My goal is to have students travel to forests, woodlands and deserts without leaving their classroom.
The BioQuest Floor Study Kit will allow students to experience a forest floor environment by studying the micro-habitats in a decaying log. In addition to the plant life, the terrarium will house sow bugs, redworms, and beetles. Students will get a well rounded opportunity to observe the flora and fauna of a forest floor right in their classroom. Students will be able to use technology to research about the habitat and to ensure it remains healthy.
Students will use hand lenses and microscopes to study the importance of all organisms in nature and how to treat them with compassion. Observing microorganisms and cells will help students to be compassionate towards all living beings in nature, no matter how small or insignificant they may appear to be.
Another terrarium will simulate desert plant life with cacti and succulents. Students will use their STEM notebooks to make observations comparing and contrasting these diverse habitats.
Additional supplies including latex-free gloves, masks and slides will be used by students to observe individual components of the terrariums and extend the STEM investigation even further.
