This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Dreaded, hated Social Studies! My experience involved opening a book, reading without teacher support and answering questions. Unfortunately, due to lack of resources and cuts in teachers pay, we don't have the luxury to spend on materials that would enrich lessons to inspire the love of History.
My students are dedicated, hard working children who are eager to learn who constantly express excitement for school.
They love projects especially when it involves their parents. Although difficult at times, due to language barriers and money, they try to provide as much support as they can. My students are English Language Learners who receive free lunch and are attending a low performing school. Our school district is undergoing many budget cuts including teacher's salaries, teachers are having a difficult time purchasing items and making ends meet. My students unfortunately do not have the means to be exposed to outside of school enrichment. I have students whose parents have more than one job and still stress about their basic needs. All of my students are demonstrating great progress and I'd love to continue to provide rich lessons that they can own and develop a true love for learning.
My Project
My children will see history come alive through creative lessons integrating literature, legends, speeches autobiographies, theater, music and art. The carefully selected literature books will provide rich content that they will use to investigate or research a selected tribe. The reader’s theater will bring the literature to life, but also increase reading comprehension, as they discover their religious beliefs, customs, folktales, traditions, art and how they utilized resources within their region. Also, the many contributions Native Americans have made and continue to make today. The artifacts will be observed and felt to promote inquisitive minds. The art supplies will be utilized for their project. The Bulletin Poster will initiate their dedicated area to show their work. My students will each choose a tribe to create projects/report according to their own individual creativity; however I will support them through the investigation and writing process as they develop them.
I'd like to inspire a positive attitude about Social Studies, a love for learning and empower inquisitive minds with skills to research and investigate on any given topic.
A teacher who creates a rich learning environment fosters future leaders: Mathematician, Scientist, Geographers, Politicians and Historians.
