My students need a rolling into math kit, domino math kit, basic primary math kit, and other hands-on math games to support their number sense.

My Students
"Childhood should be a journey, not a race" demonstrates my teaching philosophy. Young children are constantly asked to forgo hands-on learning in a rush to paper and pencil tasks. However, my classroom is an environment that is engaging, developmentally appropriate, and rigorous at the same time.
My second graders are a group of brave, inquisitive mathematicians.
They are constantly exploring numbers and problem solving in various ways. They thrive on hands-on experiences to gain a true understanding of numbers. Through collaborative groups, Number Talks, and Work Places, mathematicians have the opportunity to work with many manipulatives in different ways to gain a true understanding of math.
Reading and Writing are very well developed at my school. In order to balance all subjects, I feel that finding supplemental math activities that will engage and excite learners about math is key.
Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." Hands-on math involves learners through the use of games and is key to students' future mathematical success.
My Project
Mathematicians in my classroom will be able to use these hands-on math materials in all aspects of Math learning. Dice, cards, and dominoes are used in math games. Students will be able to play the math games independently, in partners, and/or in groups. Students will discuss their math thinking with classmates to gather many ways to solve a problem.
These math games will help to solidify concepts by using a tactile approach. In addition, the math games cater to all learning modalities which will increase the rate of skill mastery. Students will learn multiple ways to make a number, practice 2 and 3 digit addition/subtraction, fluency within numbers, and how to read, understand, and solve story problems. These are skills outlined in the Common Core Standards.
Games are engaging for children.
These days, math can involve too many paper and pencil tasks. I want my students to truly understand numbers by getting first hand experience in manipulating objects. Using dice, dominoes, and cards will allow students to have fun with math while learning critical skills. In addition, these games lend themselves to differentiation and meeting the needs of all different math learners. Let's keep the wonder of learning through play alive using these math games.
