Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As an English Teacher in an under-performing Manhattan high school, I've recognized my students are largely visual learners. They perform and understand ideas and concepts best when they can create their own model. This means incorporating lots of hands-on projects and art-based activities.

For most of my students, doing the work for a hands-on project is not as difficult as finding the supplies.

With 95 percent of my school's students qualifying for free lunch, many students do not have access to basic art supplies.

My Project

For this proposal, I am requesting canvases, paint, and brushes for students to use in English class. At the end of the year, each student will select one of the works of literature we have read and create a new book cover for the text. To create their book cover, students will draw on the analytical skills we practiced throughout the year, as well as their own insights into the texts.

For example, students may choose to create a book cover for Shakespeare's Macbeth, F.

Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, or Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible. Allowing students to choose their own text and display their learning artistically, enables me to see a different side to their level of understanding -- something that can't always be seen in an essay. The new book covers will then be displayed in the classroom and hallways, educating others on insights into the texts.

Empowering students through art is a great way to get them to showcase their learning, insight, and emotions.

Donating these basic art supplies not only helps the students, but also others in my school who will view the art and information on display. Thanks in advance for making a difference!
