Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach students in grades 3-5 from a highly impoverished area. They are of a diverse cultural background and most speak two or three languages. Many of them are refugees from around the world and most do not speak English at home. All of them are attempting to master English.

My students face a huge obstacle to learning English: they have few models. Most of their family members have limited English abilities and therefore, no one can read to them. My students are significantly behind in their English abilities already.

In order for students to hear English spoken and read properly, it is important for them to listen to books on CD. Since I just received 10 portable CD players from Donorschoose.org, students can use these to listen to books on CD. However, there is one problem: our school does not have many books on CD. We only have five at the moment. My students will be able to hear books being read to them in English and will be able to follow along with the words on the pages. They will be engaged and forget about the fact that they are learning how English sounds AND how it is written!
