Bringing Literacy to Life!

My students need puppets so that they can bring reading to life, puppet trees to keep those puppets organized and a cart to keep our listening center books organized.

My Students

Making reading fun and keeping things organized are two issues facing 1st graders. Their imaginations can run wild with puppets, which can help them see that stories go farther than just a piece of paper. And the book cart can show them how to take responsibility for organizing their materials.

My students are 1st graders.

They are about 6-7 years old and have brains that soak in learning. They have tons of energy and love getting their hands on resources that they can explore their imaginations with. They come to school with smiles on their faces that brighten the whole room. They attend a school that is focused on helping them succeed and learn through hands-on activities.

My Project

For starters I would like a book cart organizer. This will be used to organize the variety of listening centers I have. This will allow me and my students to listen to books on tape and CD because they will become easier to get to using this cart. On top of that I requested puppets so that my students can see that you can read and you can listen to stories, but they too can bring them to life. They can use the puppets to read a book to or act as if the puppet is reading to them. They can use drama and imagination to create their own stories as well.

If this project is funded my students will see that literacy can come to life.

It is not just the screens they watch on TV. It is not just the words they see in a book. But they can listen to stories to help improve their fluency and see what reading with expression is about. They can use puppets to act out their thoughts and stories they might have trouble getting down on paper. They can use their imaginations to bring their favorite stories to life all while staying organized!
