My Students
I teach in a rural school district in Western Pennsylvania where most of my students are living in poverty. Despite their challenges at home, our school is made up of an amazingly positive group of kids.
My class consists of students who read significantly below reading level.
Although many of them struggle with reading, they still come to school energetic and eager to learn. They start off their day focused and engaged, but as their classes progress, at times, they get fidgety, overwhelmed, and need breaks and movement to help them stay focused and able to concentrate.
My Project
Continually, research shows that students learn best when engaged in novel activities. In the past, teachers embraced technology to meet this need; however, in the age of virtual learning due to the COVID pandemic, technology has lost its luster. As we return to face-to-face instruction, teachers are challenged to find new, innovative activities to meet students’ needs. In my reading intervention and ELA classes, students are constantly using highlighters. We search for textual evidence, mark new words, draw lines to connect ideas, and circle areas we need to refer to later. Although monotonous, these activities assist us immensely in increasing our reading comprehension and analysis skills.
To increase student engagement, a simple black light will be incorporated into future lessons.
When using the black light, students highlighted information would glow and pop off the page. Through the introduction of the black light into our reading lessons student engagement and retention of the skills would grow due to the uniqueness of the activities.
