The students I teach are in fifth grade (ages 10-12) in a low-income area of Oklahoma. My students are part of a Title I school district. They work super hard and they are excited and eager to learn. Unfortunately, these kids do bring a lot of baggage with them to school every day that hinders their learning progress. Lack of parental help with homework and discipline is a serious issue in our community, as well.
Despite all this, my students and I have built great relationships this school year and they tell me they love coming to school, especially because sometimes COVID doesn't allow them to.
I teach math and science, which are two subjects I find very easy to make fun! Due to COVID, a lot of my students are behind academically, but my students LOVE hands-on or online resources and crave the most engaging lessons I can give them.
My Project
I am requesting math manipulatives, headphones, scissors, and other essentials for the classroom. Because we live in a low-income area, a LOT of my students do not come to school with the necessary supplies required for learning. Having these materials will make their learning more accessible and allows them to have a variety of lessons.
Math is a LOT more fun when students get to use their hands!
Math manipulatives are a research-based tool that can help lots of different learners grasp math concepts visually and kinesthetically. My goal for my students is for them to enjoy math more and to get more hands-on experiences during math. Students will use these math manipulatives to learn concepts like fractions on number lines, characteristics of 3D shapes, and nets of 3D shapes.
The scissors, headphones, card stock, colored pencils, and kitchen scales will be used as necessary essentials for the classroom. The scissors, colored pencils, and card stock are used for projects. The kitchen scales are used during science for students to weigh different objects. The headphones are for their computers because my school is 1 to 1 with devices. Headphones often break and parents don't replace them, so I would like to have extra for my students to use to learn on their computers.
