Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are resilient, caring, and eager to learn. They absolutely love to participate in class and collaborate with their peers in hands-on activities and classroom discussions. They never cease to touch my heart and inspire to be the best teacher that I can be.
My Project
My Kindergarten students are all beginning English Language Learners who rely much on visuals and modeling in order to actively participate. One way I will utilize the document camera is to teach my students how to draw. Since drawing helps students to communicate and express their ideas, we start right away at the beginning of the school year. My kiddos are more engaged and participate enthusiastically in drawing and talking when they can see what and how I am drawing as I explain the steps. For instance, when we do a directed drawing in real time, I can talk them through and show step by step on the document camera how to draw and color a person, a pet, a house, and so on. This will not only help students learn the basics in drawing which they will need for every subject area--drawing to retell/sequence a story, drawing to solve a math problem, drawing an illustration for their own writing, drawing to show how they are feeling, etc.--but will also help the students and I build a close relationship with each other as we talk and color.
Having to teach remotely for an indefinite amount of time, the document reader is a must-have for closing the distance gap by bringing lessons to life and making learning more interactive and fun.
There are countless ways I can use the document reader to enhance my teaching. Besides drawing, I can use it to model for the students how to do practice worksheets, trace on the lines, form letters and numbers correctly and legibly, cut neatly, paste using the necessary amount of glue, read sight words, write simple sentences, use math tools to solve problems, and show them real objects and artifacts for science and social studies.
