Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our is a group of students who like to learn by doing. They enjoy hands on activities. They enjoy working collaboratively as much as possible, often finding spots on the floor to complete their tasks. Our classroom environment is very flexible in regards to seating and work areas.
Our class uses a lot of manipulatives to help understand math concepts.
Displaying the work they have created also allows them a sense of ownership and pride. They get to show off what they learned to everyone who enters our room.
We are also beginning to learn about computer programming and coding. My goal this year is to bring computer science to life using Lego Robotics.
My Project
The first part of my project is to create a Lego wall bulletin board in our classroom. This wall will be used to help students see math concepts such as area, perimeter, and fractions in fun, real life situations. Students will use the Lego pieces as manipulatives to help deepen their understanding of these concepts as well as other math concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and measurement.
The second part of the project incorporates Lego robotics into our class.
I have been teaching coding for the past couple of years using Code.org and Scratch. Almost every student I have introduced coding to has continued coding at home or has asked to code during free time in class. This year I want to take that interest a step further by having students use Lego Robotics to bring coding to life.
