This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with a diverse group of students with disabilities in a special day class program. My school is a Title I school in a low-income neighborhood where most of the families struggle to meet their basic needs. Many of my students have little access to technology or books at home, so they are excited to come to school to learn and experience new things. They often struggle to express themselves in speaking or writing, but they love art. They create illustrations and drawings to respond to literature and to solve math problems. Art brings learning to life for my classroom.
My Project
All of my students love to express themselves through art. They often struggle to speak and write, but they excel when they are given a chance to use illustrations, paintings, and drawings to respond to literature and math problems in the classroom. Right now my class only has one set of watercolor paints and markers for 13 students. I am hoping to set up a creative response center where my students can find paper, pencils, markers, paints and other supplies they can use in class to creativity complete written assignments. This will help them by showing what they know while working on their communication skills. It also helps to build the self-esteem that they need. A creative response center will be great for my students because they can show their understanding of their own. As they progress, they will be able to do team and independent work to build their academic and social skills with their peers.
